Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured their place in the Europa League after defeating Rennes 2-1 in Ligue 1 on Sunday. The victory was PSG's fourth straight win and ensured they will play against Celtic or Dynamo Kyiv in the knockout stages of the Europa League.
The match started off with PSG dominating possession but failed to create any clear-cut chances. However, Rennes made a breakthrough in the 47th minute when Adama Traore scored his first goal for the club since joining from Rennes in January.
Despite being behind, PSG responded quickly and took the lead through a penalty converted by Angel Di Maria in the 55th minute. The Argentine striker had been booked earlier in the game for dissent and was awarded a penalty following a foul on Marco Verratti.
Rennes levelled things up in the 66th minute when Maxence Lopes scored a stunning strike from outside the box. But PSG regained control of the match and held on to secure the three points.
PSG's Europa League campaign is now underway and they will face either Celtic or Dynamo Kyiv in the group stage. With a strong squad and a coach who has experience in European football, PSG should be able to progress far in the competition.
In contrast, Rennes' Europa League campaign has come to an end as they have been eliminated from the competition. The team will now focus on securing their place in the French Cup final, where they will face Olympique de Marseille.
